Kanban/Project Style Backlog
in progress
Brian Davis
I really like the Backlog categories of Never, Someday, next week... etc. It feels like a fresh take because of all the great infrastructure elsewhere.
I'm curious about the folder structure in the Backlog. Are there plans for it to be available outside of the Backlog as well as nested and collapsible? I would like to use the folders as tags whether a task is in the Backlog or not. I know we have Channels, but it seems like these folders are the start of an organizational "tag system". Is this part of this in progress feature or a separate matter?
Likewise, I'm curious if these folders/tags will allow for a task to "live" in multiple folders/tags as well as folders/tags that can live in multiple folders/tags. I've always been fond of programs that can toggle rolling-up descendant tasks or not so that complex hierarchies can be made.
I'm happy to move part or all of this comment to a different thread if this isn't part of the Backlog 2.0 roadmap. --I just thought I should ask since the current feature looks so fresh and clean along with the cool Braindump feature in it.

Brian Davis hm, I think the folders should be separated from tags. In other way we might have a little mess.
When I used obsidian, tana, notion or various PM tools that tags was allowed in way mentioned by Brian, I had issue regarding find a thing. Everything was interconnected leading to confusion "what should I choose to find right thing". Whole system starts to be to much complex and to much interconnected to keep it in order. Sometimes I spend too much time creating the perfect tool that will never be built. In that environment it harder to get things done, focus on things that matter.
I agree to add some kind of flexibility: filtering, sorting, grouping tagging/contexting but still keep it structured not complex. I think that kind of way is align with Sunsama vision.
What I think what might be helpful for me right now to assign tag or context to whole folder in backlog. Then Sunsama automatically would add tag or context to task moved to specific folder within backlog. If needed we might change task tag/context in backlog's folders. - It is your idea, agree 100%.
It is my point of view.

I do not know where I may say my thoughts regarding new backlog. I decided to write it here because this feature is "In progress' so probably is hardly related to backlog 2.0 I have few thoughts.
I tested new backlog. Seems to me more like outline view of the task then kanban view. It not feel as table - in some cases tables grouped by time period. Grouping tables with time period as now would be a little better for first look to understand what is happening. Table might mitigate a eyes jumping to understand to which folder task is assigned. That might be additional VIEW.
Other thing is a naming of grouping by:
- Someday in a week or two
- Someday in a month
- Someday in a quarter
- Someday in a year
- Someday
- Never
When i start using it I was confused and I am also now. Someday 5 times make me confuse. If something would be "In a week" more intuitive way to named it would be just "In a week" to fast understand what is going on. Right now what I going into folder I read grouping heading and see Someday x4 times. To faster understand what is on the page might be:
- In a week
- In a month
- In a quarter
- In a year
- Someday
- Never
Less content, more directed, faster getting.
Different approach to handle this might be to let user NAMED grouping name from for example "Someday in a week or two" to "In a week" or "In a two week". Also add additional group like in 5 years. - I know that sound ridicules but some of project need a lot of time, and at the end is needed to validate if everything went as expected or we achieve something faster or we cannot achieve it at all
I do not know if people will be satisfied, expectations were directed to Kanban style. People might be a little angry about this. For my actually it is not deal breaker but of someone would like to organize with less small project with a lot bunch of tasks in it that might be a issue.
I do not fight with vision, I was using Sunsama for long time and would like to comeback. Needed to use different tool to handle complex broad system project and task in one place. Backlog 2.0 idea was a thing that might bring me to the Sunsama again if will be implemented well.
Overall I like the idea and will observe that is happening here.
This is just my first thoughts. I hope that will be helpful.
I am assuming this is a Beta right now, so I am expecting a lot of improvement of backlog 2.0 if possible. I have high expectation regarding backlog 2.0.

This feature is actually in beta now, and can be enabled within Settings > Beta!

I'm on a sunsama trial and considering signing up. However, I see that both this suggestion and the much-needed TickTick integration has been requested for 5 and 6 years (!!!!), seemingly without any development whatsoever - except this one here, which was changed to "in progress" in March. That is almost a year ago already, and still absolutely no updates on when this feature will be implemented?? So many questions about an ETA for when this will be ready, but from Sunsama just... RADIO SILENCE. There are tons of questions both in this thread and lots of the other requested features that no-one from Sunsama ever responds to. What's the point of giving feedback, asking questions and requesting features if nothing is ever followed up? It makes me wonder to what degree Sunsama actually cares about its customers, and makes me hesitant to sign up once the free trial is over. I really need some of the features and integrations that has been requested for years if this will ever work for me. Why sign up, if I just risk waiting another 6 years for anything to happen, if at all? And why pay $20 per month to a company that doesn't listen to its users? I reckon I can't expect any answer here, but I do also REALLY wonder when this feature here will change from "in progress" to "shipped"? If anyone from Sunsama is ever reading this, an honest answer would be highly appreciated.

Can you give us a rough ETA as to when this will be ready to use? Would love to beta test if possible.
